Lens Burn

Thermal damage to the protective lens reduces beam quality, cutting performance, and can lead to catastrophic optical failure.

Common Symptoms

  • Visible Burn Marks: Dark spots or burn rings visible on the lens surface during routine inspection with a bright LED backlight.
  • Power Drop: Measurable reduction in cutting power output at the workpiece, requiring higher power settings to maintain cut quality.
  • Beam Quality Degradation: Wider kerf, rougher edges, and inconsistent cut quality across the workpiece due to scattered beam energy.
  • Hot Spot on Lens: Localized heating detected on the lens housing during operation, indicating thermal stress concentration.

Root Causes

Contaminated Lens Surface

Dust, oil, or particulate contamination absorbs laser energy and creates localized heating that damages the coating.

Insufficient Purge Gas

Inadequate lens purge gas flow allows cutting debris and fumes to reach and settle on the optical surface.

Back-Reflection Damage

Reflected laser energy from reflective materials (aluminum, copper, brass) back into the optical train damages the lens.

Lens Aging

Natural degradation of AR coating over time reduces the damage threshold and makes the lens more susceptible to burn.

Engineering Tip: Implement a pre-shift lens inspection using a bright LED backlight. Hold the lens at an angle — any visible haze, spots, or rainbow patterns indicate coating degradation that needs immediate replacement. A single damaged lens can contaminate the entire optical train and cause thousands of dollars in downstream damage.
